The Sgian Dubh (Black Dagger in Scottish Gaelic) is a traditional knife, worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose by Scotsmen. The origins of the name are considered to be, one: because it was traditionally made with a black handle wood; and two: that it was used for nefarious purposes, hence the term 'black'. When clansmen would visit each other, they left their swords at the door, but due to the fact that a Scot would never be completely unarmed, they retained the Sgian Dubh, and took to wearing them tucked into the hose (sock), so that they would be visible, as a courtesy to their host. I start with the traditional design, and head off from there into creative realms when making a custom Sgian Dubh. I am able to match the colors in folks' tartans, for a one of a kind custom knife.
